The Govt of India allotted 26 crore rupees for the development of a church square in musiris. Now that money has been wasted and yet again proved development will have a lot a hurdles in kerala. The Musiris Project even the UNESCO had some interest on, is on initial stages still, because of tug of war between beurocracy and Ministers,The reason being nobody is getting their 'cut' as expected. Better roads, Hotels, Theaters, Boat transport all will remain a dream if some action will not be taken from some end.The total cost planned for the development of Musiris is around 200 crores. Lets wait and see How much will be actually spend. One thing is sure that some of the buerocrats or ministers is defenitely going to add more to their wealth when this thing is over. Ministers blame the buerocrats for the wastage of money and vice versa and the loser is our rich history. Well who cares about the history..? Pockets should be filled , thats what matters. Some allied contractors of the Buerocrats were denied of the contracts was being cited as the reason for current crisis by some musiris enthusiasts. Leave it my Country men ...Transparency is not written in our countrys fate,

I was on my way to Mumbai, as usual official. Netravati express hasnt changed all these years same timimg, same seats and same under quality finishing. The train was jam packed. Luckily my seat was reserved. But there were so many waiting listers boarded our coach and were waiting for the ticket examiner so that they can get hold of some vacant seats, if available. I noticed an african national(quite obvious from his colour, curly hair and built) who was sitting in our seat with a general compartement ticket. The people in my coach was surely was not happy by his presence. When the examiner came the african guy asked for a seat but the examiner said to him that he has to leave to the general compartement immedietly as he didnot have the second class sleeper ticket. But he refused to move because there was not a single inch left in the general compartement unoccupied. He explained to the examiner that he is new to the country and did not know tickets are to be booked two months earlier. He remained seated with us ignoring all the murmurring of the fellow pasengers. NObody was interested to talk with him eventhough he spoke good english. He was there till it was time to sleep. When someone told him he need to sleep in the berth he silently went to some other coach. I didnot see him for the rest of my journey to mumbai.
                                           I remember my previous journey in train from Mumbai to my Home town in Kochi. Just before 3 or 4 hours reaching Kochi there were one white couple boarded our train with general compartement tickets. They had a problemless journey in the sleeper class. And I still remember the enthusiasm my fellow passengers shown to talking to them in half english. Even I polished my broken portuguese with them. I started comparing these two foreigners .the only difference between them was the colour and that became the parameter for judging the amount of hospitality.
                                            When I think about the african man in the train and the Indians who are being racially abused in the australia and other parts of the world, I can only come to one conclusion the whites do not like the browns, the browns donot like the blacks, the blacks do not like the greens, the greens donot like the..........................
           Its all part of the game.

The excavations in musiris is also been productive for archaeologists this time too.A full figure of a pouncing lion carved in good detail on a expensive semi precious stone and also a bright micro metal object with intricate designs are also excavated from musiris in the latest excavations in last february.These are two of the special objects found from pattanam. Copper antimony rods, (These are usually associated with cosmetic use), were also in the list of found objects.The expensive semi precious stone with the lion figure in it is 2 cm and is rounded at the edge. Experts believe It must be a part of a pendant or a ring.The lion figure is yet to be carbon dated , but by the depth it was found it must be tentatively placed in the early historic period — 1st century BCE to 4th century CE. During this time that trade with the West Asian and Roman ports was in full swing. Here is the list of findings in February 2010.

Findings:
1. Antiquities of small size - beads of both semi-precious stones
2. Glass, pendants or lockets
3. Cameo blanks, coins, (predominantly early Chera coins, with symbols of elephant, bow and arrow)
4. Objects or fragments of objects made of iron, copper, lead and rarely gold,
5. Sherds of Indian and foreign pottery.
6. A broken rim with Brahmi script. This is the first pre-firing pottery inscription finding at Pattanam.
7. Enormous quantity of local pottery of the early Historic Period, which is dated between first century BC and fourth century AD, showing that this was the peak activity stage of Pattanam.

Hi all Today I thought I will the famous musiris excavation site. So I caught up with one of my friends (who in turn has some acquaintance there in musiris. Being a sunday he agreed. So we went on my motorbike. I was so much thrilled by the thought of getting a chance to see the excavation site and the ancient Roman artifacts being dug out from the ground in real. We reached there after half hour ride. I was amazed to see the neighborhood there. Nobody was interested in knowing that the land they are now residing was a place where Romans, Egyptians and Greeks had their shore leave when they came here for trade. Just imagine those handsome men trying on girls of musiris ...well sometime in the past may be some date in BC,..he he he... wild imagination. The place of the musiris port where they found the amphoras , the laden boat and the jetty is now looking like an abandoned site. There was no trace of any excavations as the archaeologists refilled the site with earth. I heard that they are coming back in a month or so for more digging in the place. It was really funny to see the great musiris port now. Just see for yourself. I heard that the amphoras and other artifacts were been taken to some museum till musiris have their own museum.

This is the famous musiris excavation site now. The archaeologists filled the site with earth. Once this was a famous port in south asia where Romans, Greeks and Egyptians conducted trades.Can You believe it..!

Can You see a black goat there. May be a direct descendant of some Egyptians goats... he he lol. You never know.

I came across some funny Malayalam Jpegs in the web. First One is a essay on Bangalore students , most probably by a lonely soul I suppose. We can see the frustration in his language . The content is not funny but the language certainly is. I do not want to comment on the content of this essay.

Second one is really funny. an answer paper of 10th class. This guy is defenitely is a genius. Look at his 3rd answer , he had the presence of mind to write Gandhi was 5 years old in 1874. I should say he should be given some marks for that answer.

The third one is a Love letter . Actually he himself is not sure whether he is writing a love letter or a threatening letter.

The last one is the famous letter written to psychatrist by famous Thalathil Dinesan. I donot think any body need a detailed analysis of this letter.

"To My Friends and Foes..."-A suicide note by a Romantic Poet

"My heart trembles to reach the eternal beauty ...Death."

Edappally Raghavan Pillai romantic poet of malayalam language wrote this line in his poem "thusharaharam" in 1935. After one year he commited suicide with a agony of refused love and broken heart . He was just 34 years of age and already known as one of the revivors of Malayalam romantic poetry by the great poets and literary enthusiasts.His friend another great poet of the same time Changampuzha Krishna Pillai wrote an pastoral elegy Ramanan, based on Raghavan Pillai unsuccessful love story . Ramanan was told in the form of verses and went on to become a hit and later it was made a movie. Ramanan is also used as textbook in kerala university.

The Life

A struggling kid growing up in the British India then, Raghavan Pillai`s mother ended her lie herself as to escape from the painful life of Cancer.His father remarried and the step mother was harsh on him. During schooling he went to tay in one of his relatives house and took part time tution for school kids. There he met this girl and fell in deep and passionate love with his own student. When world start talking about their love, Romance was considered a taboo in the society. He was thrown out from the home he was staying and the girls wealthy family opposed this relation. Later he went on to stay with an aquaintance of the girl he loved, a lady doctor in Trivandrum, Dr. Parukuttiamma. He worked in many newspapers and went on to publish his first literary presetation THUSHARAHARAM.The Literary enthuiasts welcomed this book warmly and he got accepted in the literary world.

The End

In 1936 July 4th was a day of great loss for malayalam literature. That was the day on which Raghavan Pilla`s lady love was married to another man against her will.Or should we say that is the day Raghavan pillai wrote

"The tolling bell; It is the sweet knell

Of the day of the death; I am coming;

Let me say my farewell words

To friends who come to see me off. "

- in the poem MANINADAM(The sound of Bell). Or should we say that is the day Raghavan pillai showed his commitement to love by comitting suicide. All these happened the same day. When the wedding bells were on and the same moment his girl was married to another man, Raghavan pillai hanged himself. He was wearing wedding dress and garlands on his last journey. To my friends and foes ...this was the heading he wrote for his adeus letter. He was remembered as a shy man with a delicate and sensitive in heart by many of his friends. That could be the reason the parting of his love affected him in a very deep level.

A major archaeological discovery has been made by archaeologists Dr. K.P. Shajan who is conducting research in England ,Dr. Cheriyan Director of Kerala archaeloogic departement and Dr V. Selvakumar. An ancient city named Muziris has been excavted out from the small town of Pattanam in central kerala, India.

When Alaric the Visigoth captured Rome to ransom in A.D. 408, he demanded and got five thousand pounds of gold, 30 thousand of silver; 4,000 silk tunics and three thousand pounds of pepper.Now where did this pepper came from in Rome. Alaric the Visigoth wanted the pepper to put in his food supply(meat sausages) a recent invention of the Visigothic horsemen that enabled them to travel great distances with a relatively well-preserved supply of meat. But it is more likely that Alaric wanted pepper because it was small in bulk, light in weight and enormously valuable. The Romans, like the Greeks before them, were crazy about pepper, which they imported at great expense from the East. Pliny the Elder chided them for exchanging precious metal for a product that grew like a weed in tropical east. But they went on paying out their gold and silver to the Arabian middlemen. To avoid these middlemen they learned that it grew in India, they discovered how to use the monsoon winds to sail regularly back and forth between the Red Sea ports and the Malabar coast, and it became one of their principal trade routes. An old Sanskrit text records how their traders “came with gold and returned with pepper…
Muziris was frequently visited by the Greeks, Egyptians and Romans for valuable goods. Eudoxus of Cyzicus sailed into Muziris during his two voyages between 118 and 116 BC. Muziris, is mentioned in the Periplous of the Erythraean Sea and in Ptolemy's Geography and is prominent on the Peutinger Table. Pliny referred to it several times in his Naturalis Historia. Pliny called this port primum emporium Indiae.There is no doubt Muziris was a major port in its time and was an Emporium, as Pliny called it.Archaelogist around the world know the merchant relation betwen Rome and the small town of Musiris in kerala, India from the 1800 old agreement by a egyptian merchant and local merchant for exporting pepper, Tusk and clothes.

A page from this agreement known as Vienna Papyrus is preserved in Vienna museum, Ostria (See This Papyrus data with the translation (http://www.uni-koeln.de/phil-fak/ifa/zpe/downloads/1990/084pdf/084195.pdf). This was found in 1980 in Egypt. This was found by L . Casson , a scholar, in his paper" New light on marine loans" . In fact this agreement was given to the Roman government by this Egyptian merchant as a guarantee for a loan. That is the reason this agreement survived through the ages. The first and second pages of this contract letter are lost so we are unable to know the name of the merchants who were engaged in business. If there was a name then it would have been easier to trace the family tree of the merchant as the families follow their traditional names till to date in these part of the world. The agreement says a sailing ship named Herma polon Gross tonnage (75 tons) has been assigned to export three and half tons of cargo to Alexandria, Rome from Musiris for 7000000 Dragmas (1 pound= 345 dragma).25% tax was collected by the Roman government from this business .This also has been recorded in Vienna Papyrus or Muziris Papyrus (p. Vindob G 480822).During AD 2nd century it was common that ships having GRT 200 tons used to trade betwen Rome and Kerala for spices. From the all available data till date archaeologists knew that a total of 120 ships has crossed the red sea and sailed towards India for trade in first century. But the archeologists was lacking on the data where this ships went for trading . Earlier it was assumed that musiris was in Tamil Nadu , another southern state in India . A rough map named Tabula Peutingeriana served as a proof for this claim till date. Pliny in his natural history says that if a sailor follow the wind Hippalus (south west monsoon) he will reach muziris in forty days. He also mentioned that the port was not a seaport but a river port. Romans later confirmed this through another mentioning that the port was 500 stadia from the shore. Pliny also mentioned Muziris as a port prone to piracy. The gemstones which was available in muziris were from Arikamedu region(situatedgarnets and quartz), gulf of mannar(pearls), Kodumanal (lapis lazuli beads). Infact there was a lull period in the trade between India and west because of the roman invasion of the Greece. Afterwards Egypt also came under Rome. But in 51 AD with the finding of Hippalus wind helping the sailors increased the speed of the ships and shorten the time between India and Egypt. So the trade flourished.This continued till 6th century and suddenly the port of muziris dissappeared from the history. But from the later developments in Musiris mining it is obvious that more systematic way of merchandise business was existed even before Christ in Kerala rather than Tamil nadu . In musiris archaeologists found the remains of jewelery stones , many sizes of nails in different metals, lanterns, bricks . This puts lights in to the civilized human factories existed in this regions. The black soil found in the 4th layer of sand confirms there was a factory existed using fire most probably a metal factory. The soil is being tested in the lab for exact data.Discoveries around the world confirms the importance of this small town in kerala.
The well and structures were found on the land owned by Rajappan of Krishna Nivas at Pattanam.The project undertaken as part of Kerala government’s “Muziris Heritage Project” also had collaborative support from the Archaeological Survey of India, State Archaeology, Tourism and Revenue Departments.The excavations have given clear indications that the site was first occupied by the indigenous megalithic (iron age) people.

In Berenike, near red sea banks, archaeologists found seven and half kilos of pepper in a mud pot preserved from the first or early century. This pot is cofirmed was made in Muziris.

The ancient Trade route While Digging in Musiris archaeologists found a Jetty with a boat loaded with Pepper, mango, goosebery,frankincense, dry shell of coconut. The cargo was perfectly mummified in mud. The wood of the boat is carbon dated to 2500 years by scientists from Bhuveneshwar institute of physics. The wood was identified as Artocarpus hirsutus Lamk. (wild jack or ‘anjily’) and Tectona grandis (teak) by the Kerala Forest Research Institute, Thrissur. The 14C date range of the canoe sample is 1300 BC to 100 BC, (that is, 700 plus or minus 600 BC with 95 per cent probability). For the two bollard samples, the 14C date range is 800 BC to 200 BC (500 plus or minus 300 BC, with 95 per cent probability) and 1100 BC to 1300 AD, ( A.D. 100 plus or minus 1200 with 95 per cent probability), respectively.
The steps near the boat and large wood pieces mounted vertically(bollards) indicate the remains of a port. Amphora (a clay vessel for wine), roolited ware, torpido jars, Central and persian pottery, Chinese pottery are also found in this area. The most valuable item they got hand of is ``Camio Blank`` which is a medal issued by Roman government for excellency. The geography of these area has changed a lot by a flood in 1341.An ancient map of Musiris aging 1500 years is kept in British library. From second century to 4th century Roman Arabian merchants business flourished in this small port. The number of Christians and Muslims in this areas stand as a proof. Experts says that with the fall of Roman empire this small port in the other end of the world also dissappeared mysteriously .This ancient port is also got mention in The Epic Ramayan (Kishkinda, volume 4 chapter 41) , Mahabharath (Bheemparvam, Karnaparvam), In tamil epic Chilappathikaram (Mathurai kand, Vanchikand), and another tamil ancient poem Akananooru volume 7 poem 149. The Mazhuanchery and Padamadthil families contributed greatly to the survey by allowing their property for digging. This was a great help to the archaeology team. One of the 7 churches build by St. Thomas is in Kodungallur. So this place is known as Cradle of Indian Christianity. Some say the powerful invasion by Tipusultan of hyderabad destroyed Musiris .And the Port of Kochi started emerging by the arrival of British and Muziris was no where to be found by then.

It is believed that in around 600 A.D a chera king named Cheraman Perumal who ruled most parts of kerala from kodungallore (musiris) left for Makkah, embraced Islam, and accepted the name Thajudeen. He marrried the sister of king Jeddah and came back in a ship with many islamic leaders to spread the faith. But unfortunately he died enroute. But he had already written a letter to the reigning king of Musiris to treat the guests positively. Thus the reigning King made all the arrangements for the muslim team and let them to build their relegion in Kerala. He gave them the hindu Arathali temple to be converted in to a Juma masjid( Mosque). We can still see the Hindu temple architecture design in the Mosque.

The Port Musiris has also found its name finds mentioned in the First Century Natural History of Pliny, the Second Century Geographia of Ptolemy, the Fourth Century Tabula Peutingeriana along with mentions in epics Ramayana, Mahabharata and ancient Tamil literatures.

Latest Developments --November 2009

A new project called Muziris Heritage Project (MHP), a heritage preservation-cum- tourism project is under preparation and will be fully functioning by decemer 2009. The main objective of this project will be preserving the historical buildings and cultural and traditional heritage at the Muziris site.Kottappuram Fort in Methala Panchayat and Paliam Palace and Paliam Nalukettu of Chendamangalam panchayat will be opened for public in first phase of this project. In the second stage the visitors will be previlaged by special village boat cruise through the well connected waterways. This will be ready by 2010. Though these projects has been already announced ,the state kerala is renowned for many paper projects and uncompleted projets.Public Private participation in this project will rejuvenate the local economy. The project will cover seven panchayats (local areas for governance, like a province) (Chennamangalam, Chittattukara, Vadakkekara, Pallippuram, Azhikode, Methala and Mathilakam) and two municipalities (North Paravur and Kodungalloor) in Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. This one billion rupees project will have a holistic approach towards sustainable development.Project director Benny Kuriakose described this project as a "walk through 2000 years of Kerala history and a cultural pilgrimage".
The present archaeological research undertaken by KCHR would be extended offshore and to other nearby back waters.The under-water explorations would be carried out with the support of the Southern Naval Command,Kochi.
The first phase of excavation was carried out by Kerala Council for Historical Research(KCHR) from 18th February to 8th April 2007 in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the State Department of Archaeology and the Tourism and Revenue Department.
The site at Pattanam is round 1.5 sq. km and the core area measures about 600 x 400 m. The north-eastern part of the site was chosen for excavation based on the surface exploration done before. Four Trenches (PT 07 I, PT 07 II, PT 07 III, PT 07 IV) and one trial trench (PTT 07 I) covering an area of 125 sq. m. was excavated. The "locus methodology" adopted for this excavation distinguished each layer/feature/pit/structure/ activity area on the basis of colour, texture and composition. The excavations suggest that the site was first occupied by the indigenous “Megalithic” (Iron Age) people, followed by the Roman contact in the Early Historic Period. the site was a busy civilization area at least from the 2nd century BC to the 10th century AD.

Some terra sigillata sherds, Sassanian, Yemenite and other West Asian potteries were also found in this site. Proliferation of roulette ware must have made in the Bengal-Gangetic region. This shows the significance of the pan Indian context as well in musiris.
Most of the musiris remains is buried, unexplored and untouched. The excavation team is filling back the excavation sites with earth and thus conserving the site. The museum which is coming up will showcase the entire archaeological findings in musiris.

18 wooden pegs were found deep down the musiris site in 2010 May.What surprising is the depth that these pegs were found, these pegs were send to different labs including oxford university for carbon dating. Each pegs are 15 to 20 cm in length.

The Pods are crushed and the beans and surrounding pulp extracted and fermented naturally for about six days in either open heaps or boxes after which the beans are dried. The finest chocolate is produced when the drying process is done naturally by the sun for 7 days or more. Accelerated or artificial drying is quicker, but produces inferior quality chocolate, mainly used in mass produced products and cake coverings. The next process is shared with coffee in that the beans are first graded, then roasted. Roasting times depend on the type and size of the beans. Light Crushing separates the kernel or 'Nib' from the shell or husk which is then separated or 'winnowed' out and discarded. At this stage most manufacturers put the Cocoa Nibs through an alkalization process to help develop flavor and color. However, some purists producing the finest chocolate prefer to rely on the quality of the beans and natural processing to produce the best color and flavor. The nibs, which are very high in fat or cocoa butter, are then finely milled and liquefy in the heat produced by the milling process to produce cocoa liquor. When cocoa liquor is allowed to cool and solidify it is known as cocoa mass. At this point the manufacturing process splits according to the final product. If the end product is chocolate, some of the cocoa liquor is reserved, the rest is pressed to extract the cocoa butter leaving a solid residue called press cake. Press cake is usually kibbled or finely ground to produce the product known to consumers as Cocoa Powder. The retained Cocoa Liquor and/or solid Cocoa Mass is blended with Chocolate Butter and other ingredients to produce the various types of chocolate as follows:

Cocoa Liquor and/or Cocoa Mass is blended back with cocoa butter in varying quantities to make different types of chocolate. The finest plain or dark chocolate should contain 70% Cocoa solids or more, whereas the best Milk Chocolate contains 30% or more Cocoa solids and the best White Chocolate contains 25% or more Cocoa Butter. In addition most chocolate contains a sweetener, usually sugar, this is because without some kind of sweetener, chocolate would be so bitter as to be virtually inedible. The other most commonly added ingredients are natural Vanilla or artificial Vanilla (Vanillin) for flavor and Lethicin as an emulsifier. It's a well established fact that most people love chocolate, last year chocolate lovers in the UK alone, spent over £3 billion ($4.5 billion) on over half a million metric tons of chocolate products (including biscuits etc)! U.S. Consumers spent more than $7 billion (£5½ billion) and ate 2.8 billion pounds (1.27 billion kilo's) of chocolate alone (not including coated biscuits etc), representing nearly half of the world's entire chocolate production. The average U.S. citizen eats 12 lbs (5.45kg) of chocolate annually, second only to the Swiss who consume a staggering 22lbs (11kg) per person per year, unfortunately the bulk of the money spent by the average Briton and American is wasted on mass produced, low grade high fat, high sugar products. Yesterday there was a shocking news that in India`s one of the reserved national parks in Panna, Madhya Pradesh state of central india Have no tigers left. The Central and state governments are blaming each other for this catastrophic result , the fate of the remaining beautiful beasts in this country will be same if there are no actions from some end.There were 40000 tigers in India in 19th century altogether. Since then the number has dropped rapidly thanks to the British raj and Maharajas who hunted them for fun.According to 1999 census there were 4000 tigers left and in 2009 census the number has dropped to 1400.Particularly in Panna 6 months before there was only one single male was roaming around. but now that also is gone missing the population is zero as per the Goverment report. Since january 2001 there were a drop of 0 to 30 tigers in overall population. The wildlife enthusiasts and activists are protesting about the governments .

A Small port project in Amazonas state in northern Brazil for bauxite. It is situated in the Rio Trombetas a small branch of Rio Amazonas. The river mouth of Rio Trombetas is between Pta. Morera Aca and Mt. Maria Tereza. The depth in Rio Trombetas is around 20 to 25 meters but less in dry season (October to December). The nearest town is Obidos, which is just a mile or two from the Rio Trombetas river mouth.

The only ships which come to Trombetas are the bulk carriers to load bauxite. The population is about 5000 mostly workers in the port and related to port. There are small restaurants and clubs for the local public, but nothing much for tourists. The nearest cities are Manaus and Belem and only way you can reach these places are through boats unless you are rich enough to hire a helicopter.

There is a nice club & restaurant in Trombetas for the local people to chill out.

Todays advanced fire fighting class was pretty boring as usual. I think things might get interesting during practicals.Most of the syllabus including the practicals are pretty much similar to the basic fire fighting course I attended 6 years ago. only thing is the duration has increased from 3 days to 6 days and the course fee is double.Had it not been the requirement I wouldnot have done it.

Before Starting the post first let me tell you the meaning of the word "misnomer". A misnomer means according to Oxford advancers learners dictionary " a name or a word that is not appropriate or accurate." But in Practice we use a lot of misnomers without our knowledge.Ok now read the post.

Have you ever went to a Photocopy shop and asked for a "Xerox".If yes you were using a misnomer. Actually Xerox was the name of the biggest photocopier brand. And the name had stuck for the term photocopy. The same gos with the word "Bullet". Bullet was a motorcycle manufaturer abraod and the name was stuck for the heavyduty motorcycles.Another misnomer is the term" Discman". Actually Discman is a product name for portable CD players marketed by Sony and the name has stuck for such products.

ICTT(International container transshipment Terminal, Vallarpadam), Kochi

Geography

Vallarpadam is situated in kochi next to the Bolghatty Island and linked to Kochi by the Goshree bridges. It is about 3.5 kilometers in length .It has a population of 15000.
Vallarpadam and the nearby island 'Puthuvypeen' holds great development potential because of its proximity to the international east-west trade route between Asia and Europe.

History of the project

Vallarpadam is a part of the existing Cochin port. The Cochin port became a major port under the Major Port Trust Act 1963 and now has crude handling facilitates, containerization of cargo and electronic data interchange facilities, which have put Cochin in the front as far as port development in the country is concerned. The Cochin port has unique geographical advantages as it is near to international sea trade routes which connects Europe and the Gulf to South East Asia and the Far East.

Vallarpadam Container Terminal Project (VCTP) will be a unique project in infrastructure, especially to boost containerization in India. VCTP was
inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on February 16, 2005. While inaugurating VCTP, Dr. Manmohan Singh said, "The project would be a role model for private-public partnership, blending efficiently private sector managerial efficiency and marketing acumen with public sector capital and infrastructure planning."

The future

VCTP will be India's first ever International Container Trans-shipment Terminal (ICTT).India will be come to top post in maritime trading after the completion of this project.A detailed study of VCTP was done by Frederic R Harris, the Dutch Consultants and the total establishment cost of VCTP has been estimated at Rs. 2,118 cr. Dubai Ports International (DPI) has emerged as the successful bidder for developing and operating the project on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis for 30 years by quoting the highest revenue share of 33.30% to the Port Trust and the project is expected to be completed by 2009.

IN A bid to expedite a favourable decision from the Union Government for the proposed international container transhipment terminal at Vallarpadam, all interested groups in and around Kochi have decided to launch a `mass movement' for the speedy implementation of the project, which has been delayed for the past two decades.A meeting, on the initiative of the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was held in Kochi recently to garner support from all sections against what they called the Shipping Ministry's neglect of the Kochi Port, which is closest to the East-West sea lane than any other port in India. Trade interests, trade unions, and leaders of political parties attended the meeting where it was pointed out that the Vallarpadam project remained in limbo, even after two studies by the Dutch consultants Frederick R Harris in 1990 and 1998 had established its feasibility.

It was noted that entrenched transnational interests and inadequate public support spiked two earlier attempts to set up the terminal.

The meeting also decided to support the Kochi port management's decision to upgrade the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal by retaining it under the Port Trust, and develop the Vallarpadam terminal by exploring otheroptions, including public-private partnership.

Meanwhile, the Combined Forum of Trade Unions at the port, under the banner Kochi Port Protection Committee, has decided to convene a meeting in New Delhi to make the Vallarpadam project a reality.

Informed sources at the Kochi port told Business Line that workers, trade interests and people of Kerala expect support from both the Central and State government to retain Kochi as a major port, which is possible only if it is allowed to set up an international container transhipment terminal (ICTT).

It is in this circumstance that a decision was taken to organise a meeting in New Delhi to get a speedy sanction for the project. The meeting, planned for December, will involve Union ministers, senior bureaucrats, trade union leaders and various trade bodies.

The need of the hour is to go in for a fresh initiative by exploring all options including the formation of a Special Purpose Vehicle with private public-private partnership on the lines of the Cochin International Airport Authority.

Political support in the form of necessary approvals by the Union Government is crucial to implement the decision of the port to develop a world-class container terminal at Kochi, the sources said.

In this context, the Kerala Government's plans to set up a transhipment terminal at Vizhinjam does not augur well for the Vallarpadam plan. The sources pointed out that the shipping industry as well as the bidders had raised fears of projection of Vizhinjam as a CTT by the State Government. As there is no scope for developing two CTTs so close to each other, the Kochi port has requested the State Government to avoid publicising Vizhinjam as a transhipment port at least till the bid by Vallarpadam is finalised.

Kochi's proximity to the East-West sea lane gives it an edge over other Indian ports. In the absence of a major container transhipment hub in India, about two-thirds of containers originating or destined to Indian ports are transhipped at Colombo.

Among the major projects that have been cleared are the Kochi Refineries (KRL) expansion programme (Rs 2,600 crore) and the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) project (Rs 1,850 crore).Upon the completion of the Rs 2,100 crore project, ICTT will have facilities to handle three million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) and vessels up to a size of 8,000 TEU.

Its quite a while I posted something. I was running around for my watchkeeping certificate in Mumbai. Now the run is on again in Madras or Chennai. Chennai has changed a lot since last time I came here(It was a good 7 years before). I was expecting dirty roads and crowded people with a mess of traffic, but to my surprise Chennai has become a clean city now. There are slums but reduced a lot. The local trains are a joy to ride on because it is less crowdy and surprisingly dust free and clean compartements. In Mumbai we will find a Wastebasket Local train, where people spit around and use all the means to make dirty public places. The weather is hot. If everything goes normal Expecting to go back tomorrow for the christmas. Bought some books too 1. The story of google (must for a millionaire dreamer)

For months I was trying hard to list my blogs by google.Searching in net for help, learning html, SEO, robots, meta tags..everything just to come first on google when somebody searched by name.but nothing happened .i have searched my friends names like Saju chinnan ans Alexander shom surprisingly google showed their names a s first result i dont know whether they are aware of thast or not, but their names come first on a classmates datatbase with their schoolnames. Some more of my photographs.These are all taken by sony 4.1 megapixel camera. Came quite good.Light was less, but some how managed with the flash and some natural light.The location was Latincatholic Bishops house, Ernakulam.The first one is a statue below a silver cross(or may be a silver coloured one).The light reflections you see are from the flash.It would have been nice with natural light only.

The second one was the aquarium with gold fishes. The sony couldnot capture the color information fully , so i had to work with colors in photoshop.Flash was off and the only light available was the yellowish aquarium light.

This one is not my photograph.This is a chalk drawing on pavement by world famous chalk artist John beaven.This is a 2D image drawn on sidewalk, which look amazingly 3D from only a particular angle.If you look at this actual drawing from another angle ,say where john is sitting in the photo, you will see this drawing as a 2D image.For more amazing photos like this,I will post them on request.

The best mobile phone in this second.
Ok my choice is Nokias N73 its a recent addition to the n series has a lot of features .Some of the advanced phones doesnt have the features which n73 posses.First of all let me explain how cost effective is this phone is.Its around ~20000 in india but may come down little bit after two month or so.if u think 20000 is a big amount chk out my chart below.

a 3.2 pxl camera with video 5000 rs
an internet modem 800 rs

for these gadjets u have to pay seperately and willnot fit in to your palm.NOw all this and much more in N73 and 20000 is worth.It has 3g facility.If u ask what is 3g then i would say its the future.If your phone doesnt have 3g capabilities after 2 years throw it right away .There will not be any use for that phone any more.Since airtel and reliance is working hard on wifi internet and mobile tv,u defenitely need 3g in your phone .N73 is a s60 series phone that means(nokia has s40 and s 60)It has a symbian operating system.Lower versions of nokia has the jav or jar type files running on it.The wider screen provides with a good viewing area with a decent pixel quality .It has the carl zeis optics fitted in the lens of its 3.2 mpxl camera.again wondering what is carl zeiss ..dont worry i wil lexplain.In normal mobile cameras if you take a close up of yours you will get pretty funny image of you as you look in a two wheeler mirror.In this carl zeiss that kind images cannot be seen you will get a flat image with more sharpness and more colour capturing.Yahoo also can be accessed thru n73.

I went to ernakulam with carol as planned.I just wanted to check how youtube works in broadband.I would have tested it in reliance but they charge more money to browse so i had to stick with one cafe near saritha theater.The you tube has the same effect there regarding the speed .It was as same as the normal bsnl broadband.I think continuous playback for youtube cannot be achieved.May be in reliance it would have worked.Carol was busy with some film attaching work for his car in carmate.wen it was being done we visited George Martin in his house(Remember that man who sang "maro maro" in the movie boys).I was exited to see him,but he was a little older than I expected.But he was quite charming with his french beard.
The goshree road was like a race track now a days .we often joke about it that if americans see it they wont look for another place to conduct next motocross madness.The funniest part is people have made another way through the bushes to avoid the main road.I was going through the community of "God of small things".you will get funny suggestions in this forum.Some wanted to make that novel in to a movie and want to cast nandita das as ammu and rahul bose as velutha.
what a funny thought of rahul bose as velutha.I responded to the forum to put aishwarya as Ammu and abhishek as velutha and sharukh as the jesuit father.Also a dance scene with ammu and velutha in jiyajale style in that small boat.
Another forum i went was the webmasters world which is a quite informative one on almost all the topic about the IT.The good part is whatever question you ask there will be somebody to answer you.Most of the times positive ones,...i mean the exact solution you wanted.
