Misnomers or the power of Marketing
Before Starting the post first let me tell you the meaning of the word "misnomer". A misnomer means according to Oxford advancers learners dictionary " a name or a word that is not appropriate or accurate." But in Practice we use a lot of misnomers without our knowledge.Ok now read the post.
Have you ever went to a Photocopy shop and asked for a "Xerox".If yes you were using a misnomer. Actually Xerox was the name of the biggest photocopier brand. And the name had stuck for the term photocopy. The same gos with the word "Bullet". Bullet was a motorcycle manufaturer abraod and the name was stuck for the heavyduty motorcycles.Another misnomer is the term" Discman". Actually Discman is a product name for portable CD players marketed by Sony and the name has stuck for such products.
Another misnomer evolved nowadays is the term "Google". The Oxford dictionary have indexed the word google as a verb. Some use googling as a verb, which means searching the web. It is considered such only because of its popularity in web searching.
